While some spider bites cannot be avoided (for instance, while sleeping), there are several measures you can take to reduce the risk of a spider bite.

Always shake out your clothing before putting it on. This will protect you against any spiders that may have found a cozy home in your favorite pair of jeans.

Shake out your shoes before putting them on, especially if they have been left outside. It is possible for spiders to crawl into your shoes and bite you unexpectedly.

Wear gloves when handling wood or rocks. Many spiders like to hide under pieces of wood or rock, and will become defensive if their hiding place is disturbed.

Always be careful when handling cardboard boxes. Spiders may crawl into the crevices of the box and hide. It is not a good idea to store cardboard boxes underneath your bed. This creates an optimal environment for spiders to hide comfortably

There are several common forms of spiders. They are cobweb spiders, orb weaver spiders, funnel web spiders, cellar spiders, wolf spiders, jumping spiders, nursery web spiders, and crab spiders.

The Black Widow Spider can grow up to approximately one half inch. They are usually jet-black and have an hour glass-shaped red spot underneath their abdomen. The name stems from the fact that females often eat males after mating. The male Black Widow is relatively harmless and rarely seen.
Black Widows are common in the Southern United States and can be found as far north as Canada. They usually spin small webs in dark, covered areas.
They are usually not aggressive spiders and will only bite in defense. Localized swelling and pain, as well as nausea and difficulty breathing are characteristic of Black Widow bites. If you are bitten by a Black Widow, seek medical help immediately.
